Call for Poster Sessions: SOA Spring Conference

Guidelines | Proposal Form

The Society of Ohio Archivists requests submissions for graduate and undergraduate poster sessions for the 2006 Annual Meeting, "Moving Archival Basics Into the Future." The Ohio Historical Society will host the conference April 19-21, 2006. Poster sessions allow students to share research results with colleagues, and network with professional archivists throughout the state. Poster session proposals are due by April 3, 2006. (Final posters do not need to be completed until April 20.)

Students in archives, library, history and related fields are encouraged to submit proposals. Poster sessions do not have to relate to the conference theme. Sample topics include:

  • research projects utilizing archival materials
  • case studies of Ohio archives/libraries
  • studies of archival digitization projects
  • examinations of EAD, MARC and other standards
  • other archives-related topics

Poster sessions will be presented at the conference’s evening reception on April 20, 2006. Students should be available to discuss their posters and answer questions at the reception. Winners will be announced following the reception. Students presenting poster sessions are eligible for the discounted conference rate of $15. First prize for the contest is $100, second prize is $50, and third prize is $25. Submit your proposal by April 3, 2006 via the online form

Guidelines for creating a poster session and information on space requirements are available on the conference website.

Society of Ohio Archivists Guidelines for Creating Poster Sessions

GENERAL INFORMATION
Poster sessions provide students and archivists new to the field to present the results of their research to members of the Society of Ohio Archivists for comment. The session is informal, with conference participants visiting poster session stations during the conference’s evening reception. Poster session participants should be available to discuss their projects, but do not need to prepare a formal oral presentation.

Groups of up to four students may present a poster session. Students in archives, library, history and related fields are encouraged to submit proposals. Poster sessions do not need to relate to the conference theme. Sample topics include:

  • research projects utilizing archival materials
  • case studies of Ohio archives/libraries
  • studies of archival digitization projects
  • examinations of EAD, MARC and other standards
  • other archives-related topics

FORMAT
In general, poster sessions should follow the guidelines of the American Library Association. However, posters can be any size, as long as they will fit on an easel or half of a six-foot table.

Your title and main topics should be easily readable at a distance of four feet. Details can be in a smaller lettering.

Visuals aids such as charts, images, or timelines will increase interest in your session and are highly encouraged.

SPACE
Presenters can specify either a 4’ x 4’ table, an easel, or both for their poster session. Please note that electrical outlets will not be available. If you plan to use a laptop, be sure to have enough battery life for the session.

Presenters are encouraged to bring handouts, business cards, and/or sign-up sheets for participants to request more information.

JUDGING
Winners will be announced following the reception. Students presenting poster sessions are eligible for the discounted conference rate of $15. First prize for the contest is $100, second prize is $50, and third prize is $25. All participants will receive a tote bag and certificate. Submit your proposal by April 3, 2006 via the online form (see below).

PUBLICATION
Poster sessions will be listed in the conference program and on the conference website.
